Australia – New Zealand.
With Australia and New Zealand there have been two notable, major projects.
With Australia, STG were commissioned to transfer a test bed for a General Dynamics F-111 fighter to the RAAF Base near Ipswich, just outside Brisbane. Originating at BAE Filton, Bristol – the first task was to dismantle the unit, bearing in mind that, the more it was dismantled, the longer it would take to reassemble. Equally it was essential to ensure that everything was removed in strict sequential order, in order for the reverse process (assembly) to be successful.
In due course, having carefully stowed everything on flat racks and 40’ containers, the shipment was underway, discharging at Brisbane a few weeks later, for the final leg into the RAAF base at Amberley – the largest of all RAAF bases, at 4.000 acres.
Turning to New Zealand, when the 2011 earthquake struck, resources were mobilised from around the world, including the UK. STG were asked how quickly they could transfer a Liebherr demolition machine, at the time, the worlds largest. Furthermore, as with the above project, dismantling had to be kept to a minimum – purely to ensure that the machine went straight to work on arrival.
Given that there wasn’t a suitable direct sailing, having carefully studied the various potential services, STG came up with a solution, three individual vessels, each inter-connecting with one another – within days, the unit was loaded to vessel number one and on its way.
