STG cannot claim to hold the record for the longest, widest, highest or heaviest movements in the UK – these accolades go to others.
Having said that, STG have regularly worked at the extremes – where not only the police and local authorities have to be notified, but also special dispensation negotiated with the Department of Transport. To take a case in point, where the width exceeds 5.00m, essentially the process of convincing the authorities that all other options have been explored including, where feasible, river or canal shipment. As an illustration, with the brewery vessels for John Smiths at Tadcaster, we were asked it we had considered using the River Ouse from Goole to York – only after a thorough feasibility study were we able to convince the DOT to allow movement by road.
Continuing with the same theme (width), possibly the shortest distance ever was the relocation of a training simulator from one side of Heathrow to the other, despite having to go round the perimeter road, a distance of less than than five miles!
Despite the emphasis on “extreme movements”, we feel we should stress that the the vast majority of work carried out by STG in the UK is of a regular or marginally oversize nature. These are taking place on a daily/weekly basis, primarily for customers where STG provides transport services across the whole spectrum – hence our caption: for ALL your transport problems.
