Dealing with rare extenuating specialist transport conditions

Throughout this section, we’ve attempted to illustrate some of the problems and challenges faced by the STG team. Others include:

  • High value cargo, in one case believed to be in excess of £3m, on the single trailer – this bringing into play not only police escorts but also armed security guards.
  • Extremely fragile consignments, involving speed restrictions and shock meters – on one delivery to CERN, under no circumstances must the shock force (on the load) be allowed to exceed 2g.
  • Delivering overhead gantry cranes to the wet hall at Sellafield, relief supplies to earthquake zones, military cargo to conflict zones etc.

Perhaps one of the more interesting was the customer who, before he awarded the contract to STG, even though the cargo was not abnormal, specified that the vehicles must travel across Europe as close as possible to sea level. It transpired that the cargo was pressure sensitive and therefore we should avoid crossing the Alps.
