On the one hand, we would be first to admit that this is not our mainstream business. Despite this, several members of the STG Team have air freight experience, one having worked at Heathrow for many years.
In this field, perhaps one of our greatest strengths is that we are not allied to a particular air freight agent or airline . We are totally neutral and, therefore, free to select the right aircraft, going in the right direction, at the right time, even to the point of delivering the cargo to a European airport.
Notable air freight projects in the past have included:
- Chartering a complete DC10 freighter from Luxembourg to Mexico, where STG were responsible for the final on carriage to Guadalajara.
- The 747 freighter from Prestwick to Atlanta where, at least in theory, the largest piece would not fit through the nose door.
- The Antonov 124, at the time the world’s largest aircraft, from Bologna airport (in the middle of a snowstorm) to Shanghai, with a bottling plant for Coca-Cola.
- The delivery of cargo to airside Manchester Ringway Airport, to connect with three consecutive Antonov 124 flights. The critical part being that the runway in northern Siberia was sufficiently frozen to allow landing!
These are just a few of the highlights – disregarding the more modest, time critical consignments
