Although, throughout this section, we have concentrated on oversize / problematic cargo, groupage and part loads form an important part of the STG armoury. Disregarding the levels of service and personal commitment provided by STG, normally this is for one of two reasons.
Firstly, many customers entrust STG with all their transport requirements – to include smaller packages and consignments, essentially a ‘one stop shop’.
Secondly, with many larger consignments, invariably there is overspill, not justifying a complete trailer – bringing into consideration groupage or part loads.
With the latter the important part is to make certain that the surplus does not become divorced from the main consignment – disrupting arrangements at the final destination. Given that, with groupage/part loads, the transit time is likely to be longer, it may well be that we recommend loading prematurely.
On the other hand, where oversize cargo is involved, and the transit time is likely to be longer (due to escorts or time restrictions), it could be that we recommend ancillary items are dispatched later, to arrive at roughly the same time.
Achieving a happy balance is part of the skills profile at STG.
