When River Barges Are Required
River barges are typically used when cargo is oversized, extremely heavy, or when road transport would present operational difficulties. Inland waterways allow large loads to move through established river networks while reducing the number of specialist vehicles required on public roads.
STG’s Experience with River Barge Transport
Over 30+ years, STG has coordinated a number of transport projects where river barges formed a key part of the logistics solution.
Relocation of an Asphalt Plant to Slovakia
The relocation of heavy industrial equipment often requires combining several transport methods. In this case, an asphalt plant needed to be moved from the United Kingdom to Kosice in Slovakia.
A fully road-based solution would have required multiple specialist trailers. Instead, the cargo was delivered to Hamburg, where it was transferred onto six river barges operating as a single string. The shipment travelled to Melnik in the Czech Republic before being transferred back to road vehicles for the final stage of delivery to Kosice.
