What are Low Loader Trailers?

Where does one start? There are many that say no two low loaders are identical. In any event, essentially, low loaders are designed to solve two problems.

Firstly, the question of overweight cargo, in excess of a standard trailer, particularly concentrated weight – given that the norm for a standard trailer is about 24tons, spread over a length of 13.6m.

Continuing with weight, on the one hand the sky’s the limit. Having said that, on the public road/highway, 100/120tons is generally regarded as the practical limit – resulting in a vehicle gross train weight of around 150/175tons. Needless to say, this varies enormously from country to country.

Secondly over height given that the maximum load height on a standard trailer is about 2.50m.

On this question, the deck height on most low loaders varies from 35cms to 65cms – if you relate this to bridge heights of between 4.45m (Germany) and 5.00m (UK), in the best of circumstances, it equates to a load heights of between 3.80m and 4.65m – disregarding specified, high load routes.

Careful trailer selection is paramount – the ability to choose the optimum low loader, taking into account the cargo height and weight, on the preferred route – is one of the greatest strengths of the STG Team.
