When River Barges Are Required

River barges are typically used when cargo is oversized, extremely heavy, or when road transport would present operational difficulties. Inland waterways allow large loads to move through established river networks while reducing the number of specialist vehicles required on public roads.

STG’s Experience with River Barge Transport

Over 30+ years, STG has coordinated a number of transport projects where river barges formed a key part of the logistics solution.

Relocation of an Asphalt Plant to Slovakia

The relocation of heavy industrial equipment often requires combining several transport methods. In this case, an asphalt plant needed to be moved from the United Kingdom to Kosice in Slovakia.

A fully road-based solution would have required multiple specialist trailers. Instead, the cargo was delivered to Hamburg, where it was transferred onto six river barges operating as a single string. The shipment travelled to Melnik in the Czech Republic before being transferred back to road vehicles for the final stage of delivery to Kosice.

96-Ton Industrial Component to Romania

A Swiss customer required delivery of a 96-ton component from Plzen in the Czech Republic to Resita in Romania. Transporting the load entirely by road would have required a vehicle combination exceeding 160 tons.

STG therefore arranged transport by road to Bratislava, where the cargo was transferred onto a river barge for shipment along the Danube before completing the final stage of delivery to Romania.

Gas Turbine Delivery into Central Paris

Delivering a gas turbine into the centre of Paris presented significant logistical constraints. Due to the size and weight of the cargo, road transport through the city was not a practical option.

STG therefore chartered an ocean-going barge capable of navigating the locks on the River Seine, allowing the turbine to be delivered directly into central Paris.

London Eye Construction Project

STG is perhaps best known for its involvement in the construction of the London Eye. In addition to coordinating the road transport of the 32 oversized glass capsules through France, the final stage of the project involved modified Thames barges delivering the capsules into Westminster, where they were lifted directly onto the structure.
